Nam Pla Prik on a Bangkok restaurant table

Nam Pla Prik (Fish Sauce Chilli) is a a thai standard, to be found on all thai restaurant tables. You can spoon it onto your rice or noodle dish to add saltiness and chilli heat. The fish sauce (Nam Pla) is standard bottled stuff available everywhere. The chilis used are the very hot Prik Kee Noo translated as mouse poo chillis due to their small rotund nature.

If you visit wikipedia and other sites they may tell you that this chili is the same as what we call the Bird’s Eye Chilli but they are different species. The Bird’s Eye Chili is called Prik Nok in Thai and is slightly longer and less spicy than Prik Kee Noo.

Recipe (use quantities to your taste):

  • Thai Fish Sauce
  • Finely chopped Prik Kee Noo or Bird’s Eye chillis as alternative
  • Lime Juice
  • Optional chopped garlic/shallots
